BASTED is a free solution that expands the honeypot idea in order to enable system administrators to gather information about spam e-mails. The idea behind BASTED is an expansion of the honeypot philosophy in order to gather information about unsolicited e-mails. BASTED is based on the study of the way spammers work. Spammers use programs that automatically gather text matching e-mail address format (user@domain.com). Then they use these adresses for emailing purposes. That's were BASTED comes to play. BASTED tricks the spambots into collecting email adresses that were randomly generated by a php script. These adresses are in the general format of poorsoul@spamhost.yourdomain.net and should be handled by your MTA to forward all e-mail in one box. Once mail is received on that box a perlscript is invoked and inserts the mail message in BASTED's database. After that BASTED generates reports containing all the associated data from the spam mail received. Then, you can use the data assorted in the database to track, block, do whatever you want with those filthy spammers. Currently, BASTED is designed to function on its own vhost (for web and mail), which gives the advantage of only receiving spam messages sent solely to adresses that were generated by the php script. This way BASTED can generate reports about spam-mail received from the php script generated mail addresses, associate these results with IP addresses of spammers and spamcrawlers and last but not least create abuse reports throught on the fly, all through its web based interface. BASTED is written in php and perl, and also requires a mailserver accepting spam-mail for a dns record, and a web-server to host the php-scripts and the administritative interface.
